Gideon was on a mission, vital to his survival. The only way that he was going to make it through the next week of classes was if he was able to get a pack of cigarettes soon, as his store was running dangerously low. He had tried various, magical alternates to keeping his stash from diminishing so rapidly, but there didn't seem to be a cure out there. The one that had some promise was the idea of multiplying the cigarettes by magic until he had what he needed. However, this posed a problem because if he tried to multiply a copy, it ended up being very weak and making him want to smoke more. That wouldn't be so bad, but his roommates had caught onto this, and stolen all his real cigarettes, so all he had left were the copies.
So Gideon picked up his sweater and headed for- well, not the hills, but for Hogsmede. It was the same difference, anyway. He pulled it over his head, which left his hair even messier, but Molly wasn't around, so that didn't really matter. No one was going to yell at him about it, that was a definite perk of being a seventh year. You got major respect. It was fun to see the looks in the first years' eyes, for instance, when they realized that he was the big, bad Ravenclaw Beater and Quidditch captain.
So Gideon walked along the path, intent on his purpose, when he saw a girl up ahead of him. Well, this might be a business trip, but why not have some pleasure, too? He thought to himself, and hurried to catch up with her. He was already begining to formula a plan. If it was someone boring or taken, he would just ask about homework and leave. If it was someone interesting, though... well, then, he could always wait and get a new pack later. "Hey," he said, slightly out of breath because of the cold, before he realized who it was.
